Be Cyber Aware At Sea - A Global Maritime Industry Initiative

The Be Cyber Aware At Sea campaign is a global maritime and offshore industry initiative to raise awareness and educate crew members and the offshore workforce, by offering practical advice in a non-technical language that can be understood by all stakeholders.

This online Maritime Cyber Security Awareness (MCSA) training course and the supporting guidance booklet, takes a bottom-up approach and is aimed at one of the biggest vulnerabilities onboard, ‘The Human Element’. The guidance found in this course is not intended to replace your organisation's approach to cyber security at sea, nor any associated policies. It is intended to complement the existing approach and provide additional value through easy to understand and simple yet extremely effective steps to mitigate the cyber risk.
Nothing in this training course removes the need for suitable corporate oversight of cyber security and information security from the organisation's senior management and the Master onboard. Cyber security in the maritime and offshore environments should be considered a priority board level issue, it is only with this approach that onboard crew members and staff will feel they have the support to defeat cyber criminals and change the way they utilize information and operational technology whilst at sea.

When defining cyber security in shipping or within the offshore energy environment, it should be thought of as securing any computer or technology system that is connected to some form of network, whether online or offline. This connection provides great benefits to the maritime and offshore industries as it allows for trade and operations to happen faster, safer and more cost effectively, it also allows you to stay in touch with friends and family back home which is critical to crew personal welfare. Whilst the benefits of information technology and operational technology can be clearly seen, these same advantages can introduce considerable vulnerabilities, we will explore these vulnerabilities throughout this course and hopefully you will have a better understanding of the risks which will enable you to Be Cyber Aware At Sea.
